We went out by boat, with the sun above us, open water around us, and my family nearby. The day did not have much of a plot, but it stayed with me more clearly than many carefully planned sights. Before that trip, the Mediterranean had mostly been a name from maps, history, and photographs of Greece. Then I was in the water rather than looking at it from the shore. I think it was the only time I swam there, which may be why the memory feels so fixed. The place became physical rather than only visual. It had temperature, movement, distance, and contact with my body. We spent time on the boat, rested in the sun, swam, and let the day pass without needing to make it mean anything. When I think of Greece, I remember the ruins and streets, but I also remember entering a sea that I had previously known only as a name.
